The Assumption is one of the days when the peak is the strongest of the year to Lourdes.

Access to the site where the Virgin appeared to the young shepherdess Bernadette Soubirous in the nineteenth century, was banned and demining services were on hand in mid-day.

"Everything happens in a calm," said a Reuters spokesman sanctuary. "An anonymous call to police about noon announced the explosion of four bombs 15h," he said.

The Feast of the Assumption is one of the days when the crowd is strongest of the year to Lourdes. The two masses of the morning had ended when police started to evacuate the pilgrims. It is unclear whether other ceremonies planned for the day - Masses and processions - will take place.

Catholic pilgrimage center since 1858, Lourdes in 2009 welcomed nearly 6.3 million visitors from around the world, according to the General Secretariat of the sanctuary, about 60,000 sick and disabled.
